This is an unusual but very tasty way to cook with wheat and beans. It’s flavorful, filling, and inexpensive. Cooking the wheat in a slow cooker will make it softer and easier to grind or mash.
WHEAT-BEAN BURGERS (Pantry Cooking: Unlocking Your Pantry’s Potential, page 53)
2 cups cooked whole wheat
1 can (16 ounces) refried beans or 2 cups cooked beans, mashed, or ground
Seasoned salt
Oil
Put wheat through the finest blade of a food grinder or mash thoroughly. Mix wheat with the beans. Spoon about 1/3 cup of the mixture onto a lightly oiled skillet. Flatten lightly. Sprinkle with seasoned salt. Cook on medium to low heat until browned; turn and brown the other side. Serve plain or with chili sauce.
