A saucepan of Oatmeal Kids Love on a Sterno stove

School is already in session in some parts of the United States. Get this oatmeal soaking on the stove first thing in the morning so it’s ready when the kids are before they leave for school.

This recipe won the Judges’ Gold Star Award and is included in the City of Houston Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Preparedness Office Emergency Preparedness Cookbook which was published in 2014. This recipe is easily prepared on a Sterno stove or tabletop butane stove during a power outage.

OATMEAL KIDS LOVE (Pantry Cooking II)

2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup rolled oats (not quick)
1/3 cup chopped dried apples
1/3 cup dried cranberries
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons brown sugar

Bring salted water to a boil. Stir in oats and remaining ingredients. Turn off the heat and leave on the burner to thicken to desired thickness. Or on a gas stove, reduce heat to very low and allow to thicken to desired thickness. Serve with milk. Serves 3 or 4.

Tip: Combine all but the water and store in a container or bag to make breakfast preparation faster. Make up multiple mixes to keep on the shelf.
